Reflection

Senior thesis offers a student an opportunity to explore the process of designing a building. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to apply knowledge from previous courses to fulfill thesis requirements. By giving the students the opportunity to use real building for their thesis, it allows them to explore topics and design challenges that are not covered in other courses or textbooks. This is to help in building the student's engineering judgement prior to entering the industry.

I personally think that thesis has allowed me to explore topics that I am interested in, which is seismic engineering. Even though I am only scratching the surface of seismic engineering in these past two semesters, this project has given me the opportunity to build my foundation on this topic. This project has also allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills, as I need to collaborate with the damper manufacturer to come out with the design that fits into my thesis building. This thesis project also help to enforce the idea of 'long-life learning', as there were numerous assumptions that I made throughout my thesis due to either time constraint or lack of advanced knowledge.

Overall, I am glad and grateful that I took part in this program. Not only it helps me in understanding building's design process, but it also helps me in developing my own engineering judgement.  I would like to thank everyone in the Department of Architectural Engineering for their continuous support throughout my 5 years journey.

Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of Geoffrey Tanudjaja. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design
